To my younger self

Do you ever stress about something and a month later or a year later you realize what a waste of time it was to stress about that particular thing? Do you ever wish you could go back in time and shake yourself and tell yourself not to worry? Or go back and give yourself some advice when you were so young and naive? There are a few times in my life that I look back on and laugh because I thought my world was ending. They were such small things but at the time they felt so big. Here’s what I would say to my younger self in those moments.

Stop trying to please everyone. If you do this you will always be unsuccessful.

The more friends you have the lonelier you will feel. Find a few good ones and hold on to them tight.

Forgive a boy if he breaks your heart. But don’t go back to him.

Don’t seek permission from anyone. You don’t need anyone’s consent to be happy.

School is important. But education is far more important.

Your mom is right. Just take my word for it.

Save all of that money you’re working so hard for.

The expensive coat will keep you just as warm as the inexpensive one.

Find someone with very few friends and befriend them.

If you didn’t get the job it wasn’t meant for you. Something else will come along.

It’s okay if you don’t know what you want to do forever. No one truly does at this age.

Don’t make permanent decisions based off of temporary emotions.

You are struggling now, but you won’t be struggling forever.

If your gut is telling you something listen to it. It’s most likely right.

Don’t spend time with people whose morals don’t align with yours.

Don’t let rumors get to you. You know who you are.

Don’t dumb yourself down to fit in. It doesn’t make you “cool”.

Be happy. We are only here for so long.
